President Kruger, in reply to Mr Chamberlain's claims in regard to the suzerainty, states that he de* sires to maintain the 1884 Convention, which contained no single word bearing precisely on the ques tion of suzerainty. The Transvaal would not recognise the suzerainty becauso it was* entirely opposed to the Convention.
