The Feilding Shooting Affray.
The woman Annie Looney, who with her father was yesterday remanded on a charge of shooting Dr. Clifton Chailton, at Feilding, behaved in a most extraordinary way daring the progress of her action ajainst the man Gillies for alleged criminal assault. She is (says the Feilding Star) a woman of a rather masculine appearance, of medium
height, dark complexion, and 21 years of age. During the hearing of the ca3e she frequently made use of foroible expressions such as "It is a lie, and so are yon." While the counsel for the defence, Mr Eeade, was addressing the Court she interjected " That is a lie " to certain remarks made, and subsequently threatened to box the ears of the learned gentleman if he did not " shut up." Mr Reade took no notice of this mild threat, and continued to address the Bench. This seemed to anoy the woman, for she got up and walked quietly around the table set apart for the legal pro fession, and approaching Mr Reade from behind, struok him two blows with her hand on the side of his head, and as he continued his ad dross she picked up a chair and Btruck him across the back with it. Constable Tnohy hereupon spoilt this interesting diversion from the seriousness of the proceedings by ushering the irate woman to a seat beside the fire, and the business wa3 allowed to proceed. The accused Thoma3 Looney fs 63 years of ago and a native of Ireland, and has been in tha colony for about 28 year.?. Both the accused were scnb to Wanganui Gaol yesterday. Quite a crowd gathered at the station to witness the departure of the prisoners ! and everyone crowded around the carriage to catch a glimpse of the girl, who appeared to appreciate the notoriety.
