George McLean in his evidence in Court eaid "Had the Colonial Bank continued and the Bank of New Zealand gone into liquidation it would have been best for the country." What detraots from the value of this opinion is that Mr McLean was managing director of the Colonial Bank. Mr Bobßdfhas received word that it ia Colonel Newall's intention to visit Foxton, and a meeting of those interested in forming a local Rifle Corps will be held at Stansell's Hotel on Monday next to fix the day on whioh he should viiit the town. Afresh shipment of pianos, machines, Ac. has been opened up this morning in connection with the sale at Messrs Grace, Clarke &■ Co'a. premises, McMillan's auction room, Main-street, ihouding a Trent Bicyole of the stye known as " Road Racer." These machines are coming greatly fnto favor in Palmerston North, Wingate, a local rider, winning everything at the Otaki meeting on a Trent. The Trent al?o came Ist and 2nd in the recent 16 mile road race in Palmerston, the prize being a silver cup. The English flier, Mr J. W. Stocks, holds the world's record for 1 hour, viz., 81 miles 645 yards. He rides only the Trent and contemplates a visit to Australia next year. Mr Grace informs as that by the last Frisco mail the Trent Co. advised his firm that they had just completed an order for 2,000 (two thousand} machines to the Humber Cyole Co., ana they had also secured the contract to supply the Belgian Array— this speaks well for the Trent. Mr Elliott, the Wanganui Collector of Customs, held the preliminary inquiry into | the stranding of the Whangaroa to-day, ! bnt the proceedings were not open to the \ public. | A combined wringer and mangle on view at the sale at Messrs Grace, Clarke A Cos. premises has attracted a good deal of attention and a goodly number of orders for this most useful of household necessities have been booked. They are a new invention and a great improvement on the old style, being built on the patent roller bearing principle. This makes tin thing so easy that a child can work it. The rollers are -made of English sycamore, the best wood in the world to withstand the effeots of water, and it can be used equally well for wringing as mang'ing. We would remind our readers that the sale positively closes on Satnrday. Messrs T. Westwood & Co. have for sale early seed potatoes of different kinds, and also this season's vegetable and flower seeds from the well-known Auokland nurserymen, Messrs Yates & Co. - Early — -whitebait was served at the dinner table at Host Stansell's hotel to-day. The usual monthly meeting of the Foxton Sohool Committee was held this morning. The visiting committee for the month are Messrs Hennessy and Thynne. The usual accounts were passed for payment.
