The Truth had not been in him.
During the examination of Mr Birch, late manager of the Colonial Bank at Invercargill, in the Ward Farmers' Association Liquidation the. witness thus freely expressed his) opinion of the Manager of the Association: — Well, one morning between the 29th August and the 3rd September he was in the office and talking over the accounts. You may suppose that I got a terrible Bhock. I said to him, ' However in the name of goodness, Fisher, could Ward run up that amount ? What ia the matter ? What baa he been doing with the money?' He said, 'So tell you the truth, Mr Birch, it is over such a long time I can hardly tell you. There have been losses on the grain and on the freezer ; on things of that sort. In fact, I have iied and deceived you for the past five years, and the truth has net been in me ' — and, by Jove, he spoke the truth. The truth had not been in him."
