The Whangaroa is now putting out her cargo of coal on to the beach. The petroleum bore at New Plymouth has now reached a depth of 987 ft, and the water seems effectually shut off. There are strong indications of oil and gas. Drilling is proceeding day and night. The electric light is working splendidly. William Sheehan, the murderer of Miss Agnes Lawoook at Amberley, was exeouted at Lyttelton on Wednesday morning. The New Zealand Footballers beat the Queenslanders by 29 to 5. The Chaplain of the United States Senate in opening the proceedings on May 26th offered up a prayer for Queen Victoria and union of the British &nd American peoples. The prayer was ordered to be printed in full in the journals, whioh, says a correspondent, is a very unusual proceeding. There is a wild flower in Turkey which is the exaot floral image of a humming 1 bird. The breast is green, the wings are a deep rose colour, the throat yellow, the head and beak almost black. The disappearance of the man Harry Satherley fr-un Blenheim remains mysterious still. A National Bank £10 note was found by a boy near the river bank, close to the Bpot where the £5 note was previously found. The local polica have exerted themselves to the utmost in the endeavour to solve the mystery. The public mind is strongly imbued with the suspicion of foul play. It is now 12 days since the man's disappearance, and Ihe circumstances are strongly suggestive of murder. Satherley had a considerably sum of money in. his possession when he disappeared. Harry Satherley is a cousin of Mr George Batherley of this town. During the storm which passed over this distriot about 9 a.tn. on Friday (nays the Advatate) the lightning struck in a mob of 'cattle belonging to Thompson Bros, of Awahuri. One of the animals was struok and scorched from head to tail. The Messrs Thompson were standing only a few yards away at the time. An enquiry into the origin of the late fire at Mr Smithson's house, Pohangina, the jury returned a verdict that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated, but the surrounding circumstances were suspicious. A rider was added that it be a reoommendation to the Company to reinstate the building. The Awahuri Maoris are now busily engaged making a new cemetery just bslow Mr Weightman's nursery says the Advocate. They fear the old one, whioh is down by the Oroua river, will be washed away. About thirty of them have teen engaged laying it off. Bishop Wallis is expected back in Wellington about the end of September or the beginning of Ootober. The Commissioner of Grown Lands gives notice that tenders for leases of building sites at the Foxton Health Resort will be received on and after 25th August. Plans and particulars can be seen at the ''oat Offices. The annual meeting of the Foxton Btcing Club will be held at McMillan's auotion room on Thursday evening at eight o'olook. Messrs Hennessy & Co. have for sale a large stock of oats, beans, chaff and potatoes, also 50 tons of Newcastle coal.
