Foreign.
News from West Africa states that a body of French cavalry while pursuing a band of rebels at Timbuctoo was defeated, losing four European officers and 25 spahis or native cavalry. Signor Grispi, late Premier, who is visiting Sicily, in the course of a speech complained that Italy was always yielding in order to avoid exciting indignation abroad. If this policy was continued she would soon forfeit her position as a Great Power. Owing to the Porte refusing to accept the strategic frontier laid down by the Powers in the scheme for the settlement of peaoe between Turkey and Greece, the negotiations between the Foreign Ambassadors and Tewfik Pasha, Turkish Minister, have been suspended. The Ambassadors are awaiting further instructions.
