Five- Mile Swimming Championship.
Sixteen swimmers started for the Fivemile Amateur Championship of (be world, The oouree waa from
Kew to Putney. The race was contested on a fast ebb tide. Tyers, the amateur champion, was absent. Green, the champion of the Southern Counties, was leading by 20yds at Barns Bridge, which was reached in 18min 6sec. Percy Cavill, of Sydney was then Bsec behind, with Ha we 8, of London, third, and Hart, the Am 1 eridari cnampion, fourth. Rougher water was now entered. This suited Cavill, who drew up level with Green at Chiswick, where the time was 84min 859ec. Swimming very strongly, Cavill soon led by 80yda, and increased this at Hammersmith Bridge to 50yds, his time being 48min 87sec(a record for the distance), while Green's time waa44min 15sec. Green was seized with cramp in the stomach, but after taking a stimulant he swam amazingly well, and fast gained on Cavill in the last half-mile. The Sydney man was also seized with a bad attack of cramp. He took a breather, and eventually won a plucky race by 123 ec, breaking the record for five miles by 6min 22 sec, Hawes being a bad third, and Hart fourth. It was a splendid contest, and was watched by an enormous attendance of spectators.
