Alleged Cruelty.
John M. Healy, a clerk in the Land and Income Tax Department, and his wife, Margaret A Healy, both residents of Kilbirnie, were charged at the Magistrate's Court on Wednesday morning, before Messrs E. W. Mills, F. McParland and J. Scoullar, with having committed an aggravated assault on a boy named Albert H. Green, aged 12 years and nine months. There were five charges of this nature against the accused, who were further charged with wilfully ill-treating and ne glecting the boy. The information was laid by Sergeant Biiggs. Inspector Pender prosecuted, and Mr Wilford represented the accused, who pleaded not guilty. After some evidence was taken Mr Jellicoe appeared to prosecute. The Bench, after bearing the case of the prosecution, said they bad heard sufficient to justify them in committing accused for trial. Mr Wilford then intimated he intended to call evidence, and having called Frederick Healy, stated he would reserve his defence.
The Bench then committed the accused for trial, allowing bail in two sureties of £50 each ; the boy to be committed to the charge of Sergeant Brigga.
