Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, JULY 1, 1897. Not Again.
The story of the transfer of the license from Manukau to Wereroa has been written, and a bad story it is, looked at in its best light, bu. fortunately a similar story canQOt be again told. The IVimerston corres* pon^ni; of a contemporary Writes "I am informed that preliminary steps are being taksn with a vieW to establish a licensed hotel at Rongotea, better known as Campbeiltown, where till vow the liquor traffic has always been refused the sanction of the residonts." How such steps are to be accomplished appear pu«zling, as the voters in the Manawatu Licensing Distriot, in wliich Rongotea is situated, never voted for an increase of licenses, and thus the only other plan would be to move an existing license in some other part iof this distriot to Bongotea, re la Wereroa. The extreme unfairness in that action was even seen by the Legislature, and in 1895 they placed an amendment in Tbe Liquors Sale Oontrol Act Amendment which by repealing certain words in section 97 of The Licensing Act 1881, stops completely any other such move. As our Rongotea friends have made such a good fight in keeping a public house out of their midst, and may perhaps be slightly alarmed at the Palmerston rumour we will explain the present position of the law. The Licensing Act 1881 in section 97 enacted that 'J If any holder of a i license . . . shall desire to remove his license from his licensed premises to any other house in the same licensing district " he has to do certain things, but section 22 subsection 4 of The Alcoholic Liquors Sale Control Act 1895 repeals the words licensing district and inserts in lieu thereof the following words "undivided borough, or ward of a divided borough, or town district, or riding of a county, or road district, being in no case further than one quarter of a mile by the nearest road from such licensed premises." This effectually prevents leaps of five or six niiles as was made to Wereroa, and thus Rongotea friends can rest in petfee.
