Border,
Correspondence was read from the different local bodies interested in regard to the licensing expenses, and after due consideration it was proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr. Coley, That thi3 Council pay Mr Alex. Simpson's account for election expenses in connection with the late licensing elections ; at the same time they consider the charges are excessive, and would be willing to contest same in a Court of Law, but as the County Council, who are of the same opinion object to paying any share of possible costs in such proceedings ; and that this Council protests against the discourteous manner in whioh the Returning Officer, Mr Alexander Simpson, treated the Foxton Borough Council in not having consulted them in the matter of appointing the head polling booth at Marton, as we consider if ought to have been where the local governing body have their offices. Carried.
Proposed by Cr. Westwood, seconded by Cr. Hennessy, That Mr J. Stevens, M.H.R. be asked to secure an amendment of the Licensing Act making the licensing governing bodies solely responsible for the conduct of the licensing elections, whereas the power now lies exclusively in the hands of the Returning Officers. Carried.
