- „ « , — A story of Prsideut Kroger would - seem to show that at any rate he has mastered the fact that it is' useless to trust to German help. While talking with a German officer, the President had to listen to all the great things which Garmany was. prepared to do for the Transvaal in this or that contingency. The President listened, and at last he said to the interpreter abruptly : " Ask him what good Germany wti in January, 1896. The old woman just sneezed, and Germany was nowhere to be seen." As the Daily Newt points out, there was very little party capital to be made oat of the mobilisation of the Flying Squadron. About 200 Europeans and Maoris are employed in getting sulphur at Tikitere, some 10 miles from the town of Botorua. The oheese mite is more tenacious of life than any other insect. Leuwenhceck glued one to a pin in order to make a microscopical examination, and in this situation it lived 11 weeks. In Naples there is a race of oats which live in ■ the churches. They are kept and fed by the authorities on purpose to catch the mice which infest alljkhe old buildings there. The multiplication of tea ahop3 in London still goes on as merrily as ever, and it is said that most of them yield handsome profits. What la difference from the time, not very far back, when it was almost impossible to get a decent cup of tea, while even when success crowned the endeavour, the price was almost prohibitory. Now, on the contrary, the wayfarer can obtain ,a' really excellent brew for a couple of coppers, and that, too, amidst com* fortable surroundings. Tne curious thing is that while tea consumption in that cduntry advances by leaps , and bounds that of coffee ramains stationary.
