Manawatu Herald. THUSRDAY, JUNE 24, 1897.

The success of the concert last Tuesday night was somewhat marred by the unwarrantable disturbance on the part of some rowdy characters at the back of the hall, against whom we understand proceedings will be taken for their disgraceful conduct. As a* mark of clemency of the Crown the Executive has released Louis Chemis, convfcted of the murder of Thomas Hawkings, near Kaiwarra. Messrs G. Nye and. A. Fraser have been appointed. Justices of the Peace* They will most probably be sworn in before the Stipendiary Magistrate, Mr A. Greenfield, on his next visit to this town. Mr 0. Austin showed his superiority over all other competitors in the cycling events at the sports on Tuesday last at Victoria Park. Out of five events on the pro* gramme he won three, was second in one, and started from scratch in all, giving some of his opponents very long starts. The Palmerston footballers defeated the Feilding players last Saturday in their Cup match. Much loyalty and enthusiasm has been shown throughout New Zealand and else- 1 where in connection with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. The ball given in commemoration 61 the Queen's Record Reign last Monday evening by the Messrs Robinson Bros, was the most enjoyable function of its kind yet given in Foxton. The hall was very elaborately decorat' d with flags, evergreens, etc., and .presented quite a prutty appearance^ Invitations had beeu extended far and wide, and it is estimaed that about 180 persons were present. Visitors we noticed from Palmerston, Shannon, Levin, Dannevirke, Carnarvon, Rangitikei, WJe lington, Oroua Bridge, and other paces. Some of the dresses w-rn by the ladies were very pretty, and several much admired. The caterer for the supper was Mr J. Walls, and was a sumptuous oner; and the music was provided by Messrs Pickering and Tombs, of Palmerston North (cornet and piano). It was voted to be a most enjoyable affair, and wih be a fitting- remembrance of the occasion for which it was given. Mr A. Fraser's shop was visited by a large number of persons on Tuesday night. The shop was lit up and the different pictures shown on the windows were very striking, one of Her Majesty the Queen being particularly good. Mr W. B. Rhodes in another column offers a substantial reward. The Wereroa Hotel at Levin has been burned to the ground, together with the block of buildings near which it was situated. ' A cup football match takes pace on the Foxton Racecourse on Saturday next between the Palmerston and Foxton teams. The following comprise the local players : — Forwards, Desmond (captain), Liddell, Warn r, Young, Armstrong, Faulkner, Shadbolt, Ward, Symons; half, Wallace; five-eighth, P. Robinson; three-quarters, L. StaDsell r B. -Robinson, Tuheia ; fullback, Kiriona. ■ A reward is offered for the return of a horse. We are glad to hear that it is probable Miss Tansley, who was heard to such advantage at the concert on Tuesday is likely to undergo a course of training in one of our city towns preparatory to going farther afield. A capital display of fireworks took place on Jubilee Night from the yard adjoining Mr Stansell's and passed off without any accident or hitch. A Blight shower oame down for a few minntes, but it did not interfere with the display. A great crowd of ohMren and adults lined the street on both sides in the vicinity of the hotel; Certainly the most effective medicine in the world is Sanders and Son's Eucalypti Extract.
