Horse Thieves.
The police have secured two young men Darned John Find lay and William Scobie at Dunedin, who have committed a series of thefts of horses. It is alleged that they left Dunedin last month for Christchurch on foot. At Palmerston they stole two horses and an outfit from a stable, and rode the horses to Waimate, where they turned the animals adrift. They walked to Pareroa, entered a house, and took a watch and chain and food. They then went to Totara Valley and stole two more horses and saddles and bridles, and rode to Geis aldine, where they impounded one horse and took 12a for " driving " fees. They left Geraldine with two fresh horees (draughts), which they sold next day to a farmer at Rangitata, and afterwards ransacked his house. They returned to Geraldine and sold a third horse and saddlery. Findlay was captured in Timaru as he was preparing to leuve by a steamer. Scobie was caught near Winchester, where he had tried to sell some more stolen saddlery.— Press Association.
