Foxton Borough Council.

The usual monthly meeting was held afc the Library Buildings last night at 7.30. Present — itis Worship tho Mayor (Or J. R. Stansell), and Crs H. Coley, P. Hennessy, T. Westwood, E. Osborne, J. Walah and H. Border. The minutes of laafe ordinary and special meetings were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read a3 follows I— - From E. S. Thynne, requesting his name to be placed on rate-roll for section 439, Foxton. Granted. From S. Wilson, requesting his name to be placed on rate-roll for part block VIII, instead of Harriet Karemia's, Granted. From James McKerrow, saying the request from the Council re conserving flax on Motoa Estate had been referred to the Land Purchase Board by the Hon. Minister of Lands, and that the Board has only power to recommend the purchase of land for residential purposes, the Board therefore declines to recommend the purchase. From Railway Department, Wellington, regretting that the request to have connection with the overflow pipe at the railway station cannot ba made. From H. Buxton, regretting the delay in supplying limestone ballast which has been unavoidable, so many ballast Waggons being in use repairing damage done to the rail- j way line by the recent floods. j From secretary Hospital Board, enclosing cheque for £28 93 2d, in payment of account for charitable aid expenditure. From Dr Lamb and Mark Newth reporting two cases of diphtheria in the town. The Inspector of Nuisances and Public Works Committee's reports were read and adopted. The accounts were passed for payment. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Walsh, That a general rate of fifteen pence in the pound sterling and a special library rate of one penny in the pound sterling for the year commencing on the Ist day of April, 1897, and ending on the 81st day of March, 1898, be levied upon the rateable value of all properties within the Foxton Borough Council district under section 135 of the Municipal Corporations Act, 1886, section 87, -the Rating Act, 1894, and section 6, "The Public Libraries Act, 1869, such rates to become due and payable in one instalment on the 21st day of June, 1897, at the Borough Council office. Carried. Proposed by Cr Westwood, se conded by Cr Walah, That the attention of the cyclists through the Cycling Club be called to the fact that they are called upon to carry a light at night, also to use a bell, and that this Council will take action if this is not complied with. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Hennessy, That the clerk order from the Railway Department ten trucks of limestone for the purpose of completing the footpaths as far as suggested by the Works Committee. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, That the bathing-shed on the bank of the Manawatu River be removed from its present site to Victoria Park, and that the com* mittee make the necessary arrangements. Carried. » Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, That in answer to Mr H. Bradcock's request for returning his deposit re dog- tax collector, the Council return him £2 of his deposit, said action not to be a precedent. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Westwood, That the General Manager of N.Z. Railways be requested to run excursion trains to Foxton on public holidays at cheap rates, the same as other places get, said request to be sent through J. Stevens, Esq., M.H.R. Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded by Cr Coley, That John Stevens, E«q , M.H.R., be requested to use his best endeavors to get 2 or 8000 acres of the Motoa Estate swamp reserved for the purpose of reserving it for the flaxmillers, and if necessary to urge upon the Government to pass a Bill for that purpose.
