Notes and Events.

The annual statistics of the Children's Hospital in Berlin, which is ( under the patronage of the Empress Frederick, have just been published, and the report relating to the treat* ment of diphtheria is particularly interesting. Daring 1896, 2155 oases were treated, and of this number 1708 were sent away cared, after hating been treated by the injection of serum. The number of deaths, 809. is not considered abnormal, in view of the fact that the mtjority of the cases were exceedingly bad, and in many of them the treatment could only be commenced when the disease had nearly ran its course. ,

An unique, yet impressive concert, both instrumental and vocal, wai given at midnight in April in the ossuary of the catacombs at Modtroage, organised very quietly and wholly unknown to the authorities, by a number of young musicians aad littetahurt, the executive being musicians from the principal concerts of the capital. The programme in* eluded Chopin'g Marehe Funebr* Saint Saens " Danse Macabre," the funeral march from " Leg Perses," and the concert lasted nearly two hours, at the end of which the chairs, lights, etc., ware removed and the audience very quietly dispersed. There were upwards of one hundred persons present, among them being the poet Jean Loarain and the See* retary of the Conservatoire. The authorities are making enquiries as to the parties who allowed this remarkable infraction of the rules, and, when found, they will undoubtedly punished.
