The high rates of freights charged by the shipping companies are Causing some discussion. At a recent meeting of the Wairarapa Agricultural Society, it was stated that some short time ago a vessel which cost £70,000 came out from Home with a cargo, the freight of which amounted to £10,000, and took produce, etc., away, the freight charges on whioh were £30,000. The expenses were £5000 each way, leaving a' profit on the trip of £30,000, from which bad to be deducted such oharges as interest on capital, insurance, etc A clear profit of about £30,000 was made on the one trip, most of which was at the expense of the people of this colony. The Selection Committee has chosen the following team to represent the local olub ia the cup match against the Palmerston North Football Club on Saturday next at Palmerston : — Forwards, J. Desmond, (captain), Shadbolt, Liddle, Warner, Faulkner, R. Wallace, Ward, Lee and Armstrong ; , half, L. Stansell; five-eighth, P. Robinson; threerquarters, Tuhera, B. Wallace, B. Eoblmda ; full-back, Kiriona* Emergencies: — Baoks, Hori and L. Fume; forwards, E. Dunn and Rand. The team is a strong one, and should give a good account of themselves. It is to be hoped the team as eeleoted will be able to go, a3 the inclusion of others at the last moment considerably weakens the team. The forwards are a strong combination, and the back division can also be reckoned to be fairly so. More than ordinary interest attaches to this ma' e"h as on the last visit of the Palmerston team to Foxton a drawn game was the result after a closely-contested game, and later on in the first cup match with Feilding they easily defeated their opponents, so that a capital start hag been made.
