Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, MAY 29, 1897. Jubilee Day.

We do not suppose that the loyal citizens of the Borough purpose to let the Jubilee day pass without fittingly commemorating it, but as yet we have heard no sound. However smart we may think, ourselves, or in faot be, ;it in impossible to make provision for any sort of public rejoicing without sufficient time, and We would draw attention to the fact but little time remains. The occassion is one that none of the seniors have had previous opportunity of taking part in, and it is very improbable that the juniors will have such an .experiencf, therefore we are ace all interested in emphatically marking the day in some form or other. The Mayor is being kept extremely bu^y, and it is good for the Borough that he should he so, but as chief citizen it ig his place to convene a meeting and place certain proposals before them. One thing is evident that there must be but little calling for pecuniary assistance as those who have a portion of the good things of this world have been, lately, busy in distributing them here and there. We likewise doubt the wisdom of calling the public funds into requisition as the Borough has no balance to use in loyal demonstrations. The movement, if there is one, must be voluntary, and be the outcome of real pleasure that our Gracious Sovereign ha 9. been permitted to reign so long over U3. Everything therefore points to the day being made more particularly a children's holiday, during which a few speakers, at intervals could briefly explain the reason for the day's proceedings, the startling changes which' have taken place in the growth and wealth of our country, and the increase in the area of the land 3 now under British rule. A few good patriotic songs might be sung with choruses in which the children could ..join. Amusements could be provided, and, if fine, an exceedingly satisfactory day could be parsed. All this however needs preparation, and .thus a meeting should be called at once.
