The Sports Committee was fa voured with a beautiful dav yesterday, and a large number of persons assembled to watch the sports provided. The takings at the gate were about £19.
'I he tiaok was in first-class order, and the Borough Councillors were congratulated on all sides upon it, and the winning cyclist was very pleaeed with it, and pronounce l it a better one to that in Pal outs ton There is no doubt but that bicycle races have become a popular amusement and the sample afforded to the public yesterday are bound to make them become popular here, a? the going was fast aud the contest* close. One of our local men, 0. Austin bids fair to soon make his mark on the track in a more satis* factory manner to himself than he did yesterday, as he met with two spills, for he is a fast goer and appears to possess Btaying power. ihe Levin Brass Baud, under Mr Keen, played many times durinj? the day, aud thus assisted to enliven the proceedings. Mr Walls had a refreshment stall on the ground, and appeared to be doing a very good business. The. official* had plenty of work
to do to get off 19 events, bat they got them off to time and that is saying a great deal. Mr Overend, the secretary gave up his whole day's holiday simply to forward the public's amusement, and was noted for bis courtesy and attention. Mr W. Stansell most obligingly lent him every help in his work. Mr Eure was another who worked partiou** larly hard to seoure the day's sac* ces3. Mr Little as starter, and Mr Bradcock who at times acted for Mm, got the competitors off to first* class starts. The other members of the committee, in various ways, as gatekeepers, clearing - the track, watching hurdles, etc., all worked haid. The judges had also plenty to do, and did it.
