The Volksraad of the Orange Free State, by a catch vote, has read an Aliens Immigration Bill the first time. The Bill is similar to the measure passed by the Transvaal Volksraad, but subsequently repealed.
Advices from Brass, one of the centres of trade in the Niger Protectorate, West Africa, state that the King of Bous?a declined to accept an offer made by the French to quell a native rebellion, and asked the assistance of the Niger Company's force. Thereupon, the French threatened the King, and aided the rebels in burning the town of Wawa. About 100 natives of Wawa were killed.
Reports from the Congo Free State say that the Dervishe3 inflicted a severe reverse upon the Belgian force under Baron D^anis. The Belgian vanguard was defeated, and five officers and twenty non-commissioned officers were killed.
Grave fears are entertained for the fate of the remainder of the force.
