The Poisoning Case.

Singular rumours are still current respesting the sensational poisoning into which the police are quietly conducting an enquiry. The actual locality of the alleged crime we be' lieve to be the remote little village nestling among the hills within 20 miles of Wellington, and the victim a settler of about 60 years of. age. Tbe story goes that about 10 years ago he wedded a young wife, and, as frequently results from such mar* riages, there was unhappiness. About three years ago the husband became ill, and died, the doctor in attendance on him giving a cer tificate in the ordinary way, as nothing suspicious was noticeable. Time went on, and with its passing the young widow, it is said, found consolation with a man whom she did not marry, but with whom she lived, and had a ohild. Later on this man drowned himself, but be* fore doing so he wrote a letter to an acquaintance, directing that it was not to be opened until a certain lapse of time. Tbe contents of this letter showed that the suioide was inten* tional ; and furthermore, indicated a criminal connection with. the. poison* ing of the husband of the woman with whom he had been living. This letter fell into the hands of the police, together with other informa* tion concerning conversations heard, and thought nothing of at the time, but wbich now form links in the 'chain of evidence. -iW.
