Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, APRIL 15, 1897.

The Makawattj Hebam> will ba published on Saturday as Usual) but will not be published on Tuesday. Mr H. Sanson failed to be elected to the Education Board, tho voting having been for Mr Spurdle 48, and for Mr Sanson 45. The Palmerston Committees voted for Mr Spurdle, after having, at the previous election put up a local man. No doubt they will make a brilliant Attempt to explain away their peculiar style of voting. The topic of the moment ia, are we going to have a fine Easter ? The banks, good at holidays, close tomorrow, and Saturday, likewise Sunday, and aleo Monday. The shops propose opening on Saturday, but of oourse they will be closed on Monday. We are pleased to. see, by the Mayor's report, that the Railway Department has accepted the suggestion we made thai they should purchase the gravel pit at Palmerston, offered to the Borough, and will supply local bodies with gravel at a reasonable price. This is far better than having our rates locked up in the purchase of a pit. The Wanganui Education Board had at the last meeting an application for an appointment from Mr H. Woodham, but it was stated there was no vacancy. Mr Baker was elected Chairman of the Education Board for this year. The N.Z. ' Mr William F. Stansell has been selected by the Taikorea School Committees. This is, of course, at the wish of Mr Stansell, and will make a pleasing change from where he is now stationed at Mangarimu. The Councillors the other night exhibited but little interest in the sanitary question, though they carried the resolution proposed by the Mayor. When some | earnestness is shown it will be found that i there is a lot of work to do. Britain and France are sending warships to New York to take part in the ceremonies in connection with the unveiling of the monument to General Grant. The Times states that the Royal Geographical Society contemplates organising an expedition to the Antarctic region, relying mainly on private aid for defraying* the cost. The Society will ask Mr Goschen, First Lord of the Admiralty, to grant a subsidy in the event of the Admiralty being unable to spare men, officers or ships for the expedition. There are no signs of the drought breaking up in N.S.W. The heat and dust are stifling. One hundred and forty thousand slaves of Zanzibar have been freed by the action of the Sultan in abolishing the legal status of slavery. Mr P. Guerin has a good milch cow for sale. The cricket match between teams representing Shannon and Fox ton is to be played to-morrow (Good Friday) at Herrington.
