Manawatu Herald. TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 1897. To-night's Meeting.

We hope a good representative gathering of the inhabitants will be found at the Post Office Hotel tonight to attend the meeting called to consider wbat. sports shall be held to more especially celebrate the diamond jubilea of Her Majesty's reign. Every place in the colony purposes, in some way or another, to do something extra ia the way of celebrating the record reign in English history, both in length of time Her Majesty has been on the throne and for the immense march of civilisation during ' this happy period. Though it has been asserted by those who are in authority,. and for that reason should know better, that Foxton is an isolated place, we believe the inhabitants have no intention of being isolated on this occasion, and if the | meeting takes the steps we hope and believe it will take, it will be proved that Foxtoo, far from being an j isolated place, will be proved to be very centrally situated, and the sports determined on will seoure a very large attendance. Whatever is determined upon, moat probably a regatta, water sports, and athletic sports, need to be taken up with a will by the promoters, and We believe it will be shown to the business people that such an opportunity should not be missed, and therefore a fair liberality in the matter of subscriptions and guarantee will be a wise act on their part. Any small sports that have previously been got up here have always passed off ex* tremely satisfactorily, and we appear lucky in having in our midst men who know their way in these matters. It is possible to make the gathering a great success, and every attempt should be made to get our sister townships interested in it and to secure their attendance. We are so much more advantageously placed than our neighbours, that we can offer th^m not only sports on lnnd, which they are all conversant with, but with our noble river we can give them a thorogh change in amusements by having some on the water, as well as a steamer trip. In arranging matters a good secretary is an important point, and the convener of the meeting appears a gentleman whose services would be moet useful ; but the matter must be no one man's show, as there is plenty to do aud not too much time to do it in, and if Mr Overend will accept the position it woujd.only be on condition that energetic sub-committees were appointed. In this he would be quite right. We hope no time will be lost in idle discussion, and that when the meeting starts it will affirm that sports shall be held on the 24th May, and then what these sports shall be, and where they shall ba held. This over, a rough estimate of the amount of prize money should be made, and then the different committees should be set up. There needs to be a finance committee to secure, firstly, the guarantee of the fund 3 needed, which they could report to the other committees when filled up, so that their business may be immediately coWhienced. The finance committee would then continue securing subscriptions, and the other committees, such as the sports, the regatta, and the ground, would attend to the respective work, and the whole should attend an early meeting to decide on the final arrangements. These suggestions, with which we believe the majority will agree, is but an outline of what must be done to seoure a satisfactory day's sport, shows that the meeting to-night has. plenty of work before it, and thus it is necessary it should be carried through, in a prompt and business like manner.
