A pleasing little ceremony (says the Advocate), took place at Mr J. G Wilson's residence on Wednesday, when a deputation of electors from the late Otaki electorate, represented by Mr Wilson, presented him with a very tasteful inkstand of Rolid silver. The design is very chaste, a plain stand on which there are two glass reoept&oles mounted with silver, and a pen rack. On the stand is inscribed t " Presented to J. G. Wilson, Esq., by a few of his political friends and constituents as a small token of esteem for bis 16 years' Parliamentary service." The whole was designed and carried out by Mr Hugli, of Palmerston North: Mr Jarvis made the presentation. On Thursday the Mayor, who is always ready to do anything to forward the progress of the town, learnt that there was a competition between Otaki and P&lmerston aa to which place t'ue Volunteer Easter encampment should be held, so he chipped in with a telegram to the Premier suggesting that Foxton, with its central position by road, rail, and sea, would be a more , superior p ace to the other two mentioned. Yesterday he received the following tele* gram from the Hon. the Premier — " Your telegram re arranging Easter encampment to take place at Foxton referred to Hon. Minister Defence." The Chairmau of the School Committee interviewed Dr Rockstrow this morning and requested him to attend at the State school on Monday morning and examine the throats of the scholar? as a prevent*tive and assuring step to the parents of the scho'ars. The Mayor has received a satisfactory reply to his communication about liineatono ballast fiom the Railway Department, and in consequence called an informal meeting of the Council this mortiing to oousider the same, and the result has bern a decision to obtain a hundred yards. This will, like the Waverly pen, come aa a boon and a ble-sing to men and women. This has been long sought, but whenever mooted has been choked in its birth by the late Mayor and Town Clerk a serting that the cost would not be less than ten shillidgs a yard. We wonder whether the present Mayor has more cheek, or push, or influence bo that he has managed to do this deed.
