Crete.

The Turkish gendarmery at Canea mutinied, owing to their pay being in arrears, and they threatened to destroy the town. Marines from the foreign fleets blockaded them in their barracks. The Italian contingent fired and wounded several officers, the Commandant receiving fatal injuries. The gendarmes thereupon submitted, and were placed in irons. The Cretans have captured the town of Candanos. Officers and men from the foreign fleets have been sent to Selino to rescue the Moslems. It is feared that the presence of Colonel Vaaßoa' troops will result in rendering the position worse. The Powers have warned Greece that they will resort to coercive measures unless the Greek fleet and troops are withdrawn from Crete within six days. The Powers have notified the Porte that the gradual withdrawal of Turkish troops from Crete is necessary, and that tbe Turko-European Military Convention will settle the details. The Porte claims that the Governor ot Crete must be an Ottoman subject. The Greek Government has re* called Admiral Retnich, Commodore of the fleet, on the ground that he is too friendly with the Admirals' of the foreign fleets. Reccciotte Garribaldi has wired to the President of the Greek Chamber that 100,000 Garibaldians will assist Greece if she declares war against Turkey. There is intense excitement in Greece and the populace is defiant.
