Notes and Events.
We can safely recommend anyone who desires a peasant holiday, to take a trip up the' WanganuT rivee fo Pipiriki. We say so fronf peMooal experience. The river is exttetriely pretty, in some places approaching to the grand, the steamer service ib very well conduoted, the catering on board good, and the officers, crew, and stewards attentive and polite. We intend in a few days time to issue as a supplement an illustrated account of the trip, the views of which have never before been published.
Wanganui haa very muoh improved within the last few years, and the fight waged by the Corporation and inhabitants with their -sandy soil has resulted in a victory for the former— a fact worth noting by our own Borough Council. Tracts of land of what to our knowledge used to be a waste of sand are now enclosed by belts of timber, and from the shelter thus secured grass has been raised. The town is a compact and thriving place, well laid out and well cared for, and can fairly be said fo be pretty.
The racecourse has four running tracks, all kepb.in first jplass order, and the members entrance ia through a well planted belt of timber opening out upon the lawn, or mure correctly the tea. lawn, as it lies atthe back of the Stood. Thia is down Id well mown gras3 and has a pretty artificial lake, fed from an artesian well, Over the lake there ia $ rustic bridge leading to the' tea hbnsev ftn^open building with fern tree uprights for the roof which is lined inside with corrugated Iroards resembling Maori reed work, the floor is concrete. The effect is as though it wa3 a Maori whare. The roof outside is covered with painted corrugated iron. On the lake are to be seen black swans and wild ducks, domesticated. By their numbers they seem to appreciate their quarters.
