The Niger.
News has been received in London that Benin was captured on the 18th inst., after a running fight through bush for 24 miles. Four whites were killed, including Dr Fyfe, and 16 wounded, Captain Bryne severely. The King and priests fled into deep holes filled with corpses. It was discovered that these were human sacrifices to what is known as the Juju rites. Ghastly sights were witnessed by the expedition. The houses in Benin were reeking with human blood. A few oarriers who accompanied J. B. Philips, Deputy Commissioner, were found alive in the well amongst the dead offered as sacrifice. The Maximß played great havoc at Benin. The fighting lasted eight hours. ■
