"* *fn« ordinary monthly meeting of the abore was held at Saiaon yestarday at 11 a.m. Present — Cra. V.. C. Ransom (chairman), A. Sfcrang, J. R. McLennan, T. Masters, J. G. Wilson and W. Taylor. The minutea of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The inward correspondence was read. From James King, Foxton, drawing attention to the fact that the culvert referred to in his last letter was not under the railway line but under the County road, and trusting that the application to have it lowered would be Been to. The overseer was instructed to report. From H. Aldridge, sending his account for repairing Shannon punt. From Whittington and Koberstein, ftongotea, applying for an extra grant on their contract for; Main Drain Road. Not entertained. From Foxton Borough Council, asking what steps had been taken with respect to the road to the Foxton Beach, and urging the necessity of its being done before tbe bad weather sets in. Cr S'r*ng mentioned that he did not think it would be wise to expend the amount granted for the road until the road had been legally vested ia the Council, and it was decided to reply to this effect. From Foxton Borough Council, forwarding a copy of resolution passed at its last meeting re bridging Manawatu River, and requesting I Cjupcil's co-operation in the matter. .' From Department of Justice, send* - ing a copy of warrant as to the local bodies who have been appointed to have authority in the licensing districts. From Sluggish River Drainage Board, re cost of bridges ou Main Drain and Taikorea Roads. From the Treasury, re £6000 loan being now available, also sum of £700, being share of cost of re*. building Bulls Bridge. From Railway Engineer's Department, Wanganui, saying it was Impouible to supply ballait from railway pit at Palmerston North, as they only hare enough for their own nie. From Traffic Manager, in reply, saving the oar now hired by the Council could be bought for £150. From same, saying that the Department would provide trucks for the conveyance of metal condition* ally. The Tramway Manager's report was read, and showed a credit balance of £26 19s 9d for the past month, also saying that some rails were ur gently required ; also that some new watering places will be needed through haulage of metal over line. It was decided to procure five ton 3 of second-hand rails, and the manager to report most suitable places for watering-places. The Treasurer's report as read showed a credit balance of £999 17s «d. , The County Collector put in a list of ratepayers who had failed to pay their rates, and asked for instructions as to farther proceedings for their recovery. Proposed by Cr Wilson, seconded - by Or Ransom, That the following slaughtering licenses be granted: — Gollingwood, Awahuri ; J. Rutherford, Feilding ; Samuel Carter, Sandon. Carried. Proposed by Cr Strang, seconded by Crs Ransom, That this Council respectfully requests the Minister of Public Works to send an engineer to report on the two proposed sites for a bridge over the Manawatu River at Shannon and Wirokino. The •aid request to be forwarded thiough the medium of John Stevens, Esq., M.H.B. Carried. Proposed by Cr Wilson, seconded by Cr Strang, That the names of E. J. Riddiford be substituted for Charles Ball for part section 149, Sandon ; August Gust, junr., instead of August Gußt, for part ntction 20, Campbell Riding ; J. B. Pascal, instead of John Whittle for section 267, Waitohi; Mrs Wm. Bayliss, instead of Jens Hemmingeen for section 261, Campbell ; Clement CUrey, instead of F. Bottcher, for
section 81, Douglas Block. Carried. The application of M. Boyle for a refund of a deposit amounting to £8, which he said was. due to him was, on the recommendation of the chairman placed on the pay sheet and the amount passed for payment. The accounts were passed for payment, and the overseer's report was read. The Couucil went into Committee to open the tenders, and the following resolution was proposed by Cr Wilson, seconded by Cr Ransom, That the following -tenders be accepted:— No. 7; Trimming and metalling 177 chains on Penny's Line. M. B .yle, £2 18s per chain ; No. 1. Trimming and metalling on Rosina Line. M. Boyle, £2 9j Gd per chain ; No. 3. Supplying and delivering 6,900 yards of clay and gravel at Tramway line, T. Young, 23 9d per yard. — Carried. * Proposed by Cr Master?, seconded by Cr Strang, That for collecting the dog-tax for year 1897, the tender of J. G. Harria at £48 83 6d be accepted. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr Masters, That those ratepayei-9 who hava not paid their rates for 1895 96 be sued. Carried. It wa3 resolved that tenders bo called for forming and metalling on McDonell's Line, and formation on Tompkins' Line ; aIBO fresh tenders be called for metalling Tompkins' and Jones' Lines ; for the delivtry of 150 yards gravel at Sanson ; for metalling on Lee's Line from the corner to Rakehou gate* and for the remaining portion of Mount Stewart and Halcombe Road. Tenders to ibe in by Feb. 23, Carried. • : Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Gc Taylor, That Mr J. G Harris ba appointed dog-tax collector for the County of. Manawatu, and that the registrar's offiaa be the Manawatu County Office. Carried. Proposed by Or Ransom, seconded by Cr McLennan, That tenders be called for metal delivered on the various roads in the County as recommended in the overseer's report. Tenders to be in by next regular meeting of the Council. Carried. ! Proposed by Cr Wilson, seoondt d by Cr McLennan, That the poundkeeper be given notice that his engagement with this Oounoil will terminate after the expiry of three months, in terms oi his agreement with the Council, and that applica* tiona be received for the position at next meeting. — Carried. Proposed by Cr Ransom, seconded by Cr McLennan, That a special meeting of the Council be held on February 28rd at 2 p.m , for the purpose of dealing with tenders. - Carried. Proposed by Cr Strang, seconded by Cr McLannan, That the Clerk write to the Sluggish River Drainage Board re cleaning outlet of railway drain at Oroua Bridge, and that when the same has been done the Overseer be instructed to have the said drain cleaned out along the road. Carried. Proposed by Cr .Wilaon, seconded by Cr Masters, That the Overseer from this date be paid at the rate of 10s per diem, and that the Chairman employ an assistant overseer during such time as there is a press of work. —Carried. The chairman said the Council recognised that the overseer, Mr Mitchell, would have a great deal more to do during the expenditure of the loan money, and had decided to give him a little extra remuneration, and to also appoint another man to help him in his duties. Mr Mitchell thanked the Council for their consideration. Tbe Council then adjourned.
