Our Library.

We notice by the report ot the special meeting of the Borough Council tbat the resignation of the librarian ban been accepted It is a fact that he has been away from the district for some wnpks, which brings to mind the question as to who relieved him nf the responsibility of the pafpty of the books entrusted to his care ? The Councillors, who are

answerable for the safe keeping of the public property, would do well to appoint a committee to see how many of the Volumes upon the catalogue of the librv:y are to be found on the shelves. It was urged by us, prior to the late librarian's appointment* that this course should be adopted, and that he should make periodical counts so as to promptly check the undoubted loss which tha Borough sustains. We are not sure if this provision was entered into the agreement ; if it was it is recessary to ascertain for what he is liable, but if it was not it still is of importance that the books should be properly handed over to the new librarian, and that he should be held answerable, or all the money spent on this institution will soon be lost. Just now may not be the time to suggest further outlay, but what the Council shofr^ keep steadily in view is the erection of a suitable reading room in front of the present building, which might become the commencement of a local museum. Our library and reading room is a wise institution, and should receive the cartful attention of our public men, and we think its popularity might be much increased, as it is a long time since any new books have been received.
