The Races.

To-morrow the long-looked for races will be held on the Foxton course. Given a fine day, which the Club almost always have, despite prior appearances, there should. be the largest assemblage thereon yet seen. Good order there always has been, but to insure it Constable Gillespie will be supported by four other constables. The " force " will therefore be in force. The luncheon, a matter nowise despised by old or young, has been placed in the capable hands of Me Arbon, and we thus look forward to the^times when Mr Williams catered to be repeated. Mr Arbon's aim need only be to. emulate, not to to sarpasi that caterer, to merit the good will and applause of his customers. Mr Joe Tos having secured the refreshment booth is likewise a guarantee for the public being well attended to, and that the young people will be able to obtain fruit and sweets galore. Mr Henry Border has the two publican'! booths, which will satisfy chose who like good liquor, that they will be able to g§t it with despatoh and civility.

The correct cards will be sold by Mr Tartalini, one aecuetomed to such work, so that all wanting them will be sure to have the faot of their being for sale brought prominently under their notice. Tbe cards have a very useful diagram of the course on the covers, and also contains, besides the names of the horses, the weights and colours of the riders, a. carefully oompiled list of the pedigrees of the horses engaged at the meeting. The cards have been printed at the Manawatu Herald Office, and are up to the usual excellent style Mr Cook turns them oat.

We desire to draw attention to the fact that no bookmakers will be allowed on the course. To set at rest any misapprehension that may have arisen from a very misleading paragraph in the N.Z Times relating to bookmakers, we give the Post's report of the deputation which throws a very different light on the remarks of the Premier. The N.Z. Times reported : - " After several members of the deputation had spoken, the Premier decided that until the Su* preme Court had given its deoision in the test case pending it would not be right for the Government to inter* fere in any way." The Pott* report is, however, very different, and it would be wise for bookmakers to note it. It finishes as follows :— " The Premier said that the chairman of a public meeting could call upon the police to remove an objectionable person, and the police were bound by law to comply with his directions. The question was whether the police could also interfere in tbe case of bookmakers using the raoe* courses. For the Minister of Justice to give instructions to the polioe not to to take any part in carrying out the wishes of the club would be most improper at the present juncture, and no such instructions would be given. i Mr Pollock said that the clubs knew, very well that the bookmakers j were not breaking the law, bat nevertheless used the polioe to oust them from public reoreation gronnds. | Tbe Premier reiterated bis decision not to interfere, and tbe deputation withdrew." i Anticipations by " St. laoeb."
