The Dresden Piano Co, says the N.Z. Times, gave away an organ to purchasers | of pianos and organs daring December, i.e., each client received a share, and yesterday there was present in the concert hall of th« Dresden Co. a large number of ladies and gentlemen, who unanimously allotted the organ to Mrs G. C. Coley, of Foxton, wife of the popular flaxmiller of that town. A man named Frank H. Beeves was charged at Maaterton with the laroeny of household goods and sentenoed to one month's imprisonment. It appears that the goods were the property of Henry George Westbrook, whose wife the prisoner eloped with and had since been living with her in Wanganui. The goods, the prisoner said, were taken by Mrs Westbrook and she said they were her personal belongings. We art in receipt of another new newspaper, entitled The N.Z. Europton Mail Seios." The first number was published on Wednesday. It will be devoted entirely to the publication of European and general news of the world as speedily as possible after the arrival of each San Francisco mail. As the outcome of the unjustifiable arrest of Mr George South, sharebroker, at Auokland, the Minister of Justice has decided that Sergeants McMahon and Gamble be requested to send in their resignations ; that Constables McCarthy and Quirk be dismissed from the Force ; and that Constable Clark be reduced to th* rank of second- class constable, and be transferred to another district. He. now believes h« has found a means to make the blind see by the .use of the JRontgen rays, the only condition being that the optic nerve must be intact. Experiments have been made at his laboratory apparently to some extent successfully, and Mr Edison, say Dalziel's correspondent, prophesies that within three years they will be abie to restore tight to the blind. The annual statistics in connection with the Palmerston Hospital are as follows :— Total number of patients under treatment for year ending December 81st, 1896, males 163, females 81, total 244 ; number digcharged cured 174, incurable 15, deaths 22, number of patients in Hospital on January Ist, 1897, 33. During the year there was an increase of 26 patient* admitted, as against the total number admitted the preceding year. In connection with the statistics it is interesting to note that persons between the ages of fifteen and twenty-five years form the bulk of the patients, those between the ages of thirtyfive and forty-five years ooming next, females of the latter age contributing largely to the total.
