Teetotaller, a term applied to an ! abstainer from all fermented liquors, originated with Richard Tamer, an artisan of Preston, who, contending for the principle at a temperance meeting about September, 1888, asserted " that nothing but teie-Uftal will do." The word was immediately adopted. : # . ■* * * There was a sect called Encratites, followers of Titian, about the year 170, who denounced marriage, and abstained from fleßh, and from wine •Ten at the Lord's supper. >:: * ■ * # Temperance societies originated with Mr Oalhoun, who, while be was seoretary of war in America, in order to counteract the habitual use of ardent spirits among the people, . prohibited them altogether in the' United States' army in 1818. # * # # ■ Good Templars (first lodges formed* in Araertoa) pledged themselves not to make, buy, sell, furnish, or cause to be famished, intoxicating liquors to others as a beverage.
