Earthquakes in England.
An earthquake was felt in the West of -England last Wednesday, being especially severe in Stroud (Gloucestershire) and Ledbury (Herefordshire). The houses rocked and the inhabitants ran into the streets. Hereford. Cathedral suffered some damage. A woman was so terrified that she died from the shock. At 5 o'clock on Thursday morning furthar shocks were felt over a still wider area, extending from Cardigan to the Thames Valley. In Chester and Lancashire they were severe, but no serious accident occurred.
Four shocks of earthquake were felt altogether, in some plaoes lasting a minute and a half. The severest ocourred at Birmingham and Worcester, and in Shropshire. The tremors were preceded by a rushing noise like that of a hurricane. At Darley some workmen were thrown to the ground. The earthquake was only slightly felt in the vicinity of London.
The worst of the earthquake was felt in Wales and west of the Midlands. It also reached Durham and Lincoln. The shake was felt in over 200 tcwn3 and village?. The tower of Windsor Castle rocked.
