In a Minority.
It is sometimes a proud position to be in the minority though very few like it. At the last meeting of the Borough Council Cra Hennessy and Border were in that position though advocates of a just cause. It is known that a very old aervant of the Borough, Mr John Sullivan, has had, from ill health, to resign the position he has held for twenty yean, ai roadman. During the whole tenure of office he has succeeded in satisfying the varying Mayora and and Councillors. At one time it was suggested that his wages should be increased to six shillings a day, but Mr Sullivan preferred receiving only five shillings a day rather than there should be any suggestion that he did not earn hie pay. This shows the downright honesty of the man. The Council when seeking applications for the office held by Mr Sullivan fixed the wages at six shillings, which thus suggested Cr 'Hennessy's motion that three months' leave of absence be granted Mr John ■ Sußmnen full pay. The foot was «nown that Mr Sullivan was ill, it was known that he had given bis best services to the Borough for so many years, and it was known that i £or years, had he been of a grasping < nature he could have had one shilling , a day more than he had, as his fellow labourer received six shillings, ] yet the Borough Councillors, except ] Crs Hennessy and Border, grudged , this slight token of the appreciation of an old servant's work 1 In such a case as this it is more creditable to be on the side of the minority who proposed and supported such a fitting and opportune (as it would have < been) tribute.
