THE MAYORALTY.
TO TOT EDITOR 07 THB MANAWATO BXBAU). Sib,-— The election of a new live Mayor to represent our important Borough is close at hand and I am surprised to find that the two candidates already announced for the honour have not signified their intention of placing their views before the ratepayers. There is still time, and as tho election is likely to be a hotly-contested one — both being confident of success — by meeting the ratepayers face to face a lot of good may result. I oannot say that our past Mayors have been altogether a sucor-83 (in my humble opinion ;) but no doubt they did what they could, but should have done better. However, a new one is to be eleoted, and I trust that the one successful will agitate for a £2000 or £8000 loan, which is sadly needed to improve our Borough roads, and to carry out other urgent works. A few hundreds have been squandered in times gone by — uselessly, I say — notably, for artesian water, and the ory is now "no money in hand." The man who is so very fortunate to be eleoted by his fellow-townsmen, will, I hope, be the one favourable to* going in for a loan. Mr J. B. Stanaell and Mr E. Osborne are the candidates, both capable men, and by holding a meeting such as I say, they would be doing the correot thing and which is certainly due to the ratepayers. I am sorry to have taken up rather much space. I am, &c, Ratepayer. Fozton, 19th Nov., 1896.
