Manawatu County Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the above was held on Tuesday last at Sanson at 11.80 a.m. Present — Cra Bansom (chairman), Hammond, Masters, Taylor and Strang. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence received was read as follows : — From Lands and Survey Department, requiring a copy of the advertisement in reference to closing of a portion of the Sandon-Carnarvon Boad. Attended to. From B. Piggott, Shannon Ferry* laying he had received the gear for tue at the ferry, and enclosing aocount for same. From Palmerston Hospital Board, notifying that the County were entitled to return two members, and requiring the names of such members elected. . • From J. B. Hamilton, enclosing amount for rates, and also asking that Mrs Margaret Tompkins' name be placed on rate roll instead of his. From Frank Owen, surveyor, rt ■urveying road through Mr Hunter's property, and offering to undertake the work. From A. S. Easton, Foxkon, saying that the tram engine had destroyed about two chains of stab fencing on section 264, and wishing it replaced at once. MrWrigley, the tramway manager, was present and said he did not think the tram engine was responsible for the fire, as they had been burning nothing but coal for some time past. After hearing Mr Wrigley's explanation, the clerk was instructed to write to Mr Easton that no evidence had been brought forward that the Counoil wore in any way responsible. From J. C. Batchelor, in reply, requiring a receipt in full for £200 re bond of late clerk. The clerk said the receipt had been sent. From Bangitikei County Council, wishing to know if the necessary steps had been taken to obtain its share of the loan required for renewing the Bangitikei Bridge. The Treasurer's report showed a net debit balance of £781 16s Id. The Tramway Manager's report for October was read, in which he said the repairs recommended at goods shed had been carried out. The overseer's report for the month showed the roads throughout the County to be in fair order. Proposed by Cr Bansom, seconded by Cr Taylor, That Mrs Margaret Tompkins' name be placed on the rate book in place of J. B. Hamilton for sections 228, 229, 280. 281, 282, j 284, 243 and 244, township of Eongotea, Campbell Biding. Carried, j Proposed by Cr Masters, seconded j by Cr Strang, That the overseer be | instructed to get the road near the Bulls Bridge protected as soon as possible. Carried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Or Hammond, That the overseer make a thorough inspection of all roads where gorge is growing, and being allowed to spread, and to have all gorse for whioh this Council is liable ferubbed out where possible, and to serve notices upon all responsible landowners, and to see that such notices are complied with. Carried. The accounts were passed for payment. A speoial meeting was held at 2 o'olock, when the following resolution was carried. Proposed by Cr Bansora, seconded by Cr Taylor, That it is the intention of the Manawatu County Council by virtue of the provisions of "The Local Bodies Loans Act, 1896," and by virtue of a warrant issued under the hand of His Excellenoy the Governor in terms of section 118 of " The Public Works Act, 1894," dated 23rd June, 1896, authorising the construction (rebuilding) of the bridge over the Bangitikei River at the place where the main road from the township of .Sanson to the township of Bulls crosses the said river and apportioning the cost of such work, to borrow the sum of £700 under •• The Government Loans to Local Bodies Act, 1886, "for the purpose of providing proportion of the cost of re-building the said bridge and expenses in connection therewith, and that a special rate of one »<»Yenty- fifth of a penny in the £ be made and levied on the value of all rateable property within the County of Manawatu for the purpose of jffoviding the interest and sinking 'taaSeaihß said loan of £700, such Mtelobean annual recurring rate for a period of twenty-six years, payable in one sum on the Ist day of

April in each year. The above speoial order to take effect from the 10th December, 1896. The Council then resumed its ordinary sitting. Proposed by Gr Masters, seconded by Cr Strang, That a speoial meet* ing of the Council be held on Wednesday, the 9th December, 1896, to confirm the resolution notifying the intention to borrow £700 under the Local Bodies Act 1886," and to strike a special rate of one seventyfifth of a penny in the £ to provide interest and sinking fund. Carried. Proposed by Cr Taylor, seconded by Cr Masters, That Whitfcington and Koberstein's tender for work on the Main Drain Boad be accepted. Carried.
