Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, NOV. 7, 1896. School Expenses.
It is very satisfactory to remember that our local School Committoe supported Mr Pirani's election to the Wanganui Education Board. Since a member he has done good Work, and appears to have stirred the other members to do likewise, as the Board haß ehown moreidesire to meet the committees in a better spirit, and to have adopted more advanced views than they did but a short time ago. The last move is a particularly wise and generous one, and is in connection with children . qualifying for scholarships. The charge at the colleges at present in force is £40 for 89 weeks board, with free tuition in. To the colleges, we suppose, the matter whether a pupil boards there or not, is one of no moment, as at the last meeting of the Wanganui Education Board, Mr Ein^son, of the , Wanganui Collegiate School, wrote offering free tuition to all lads qualifying for scholarships. This is both liberal and wise, but the charge for board acts as a deterrent to many who would otherwise be glad to have the teaching. Mr Pirani has thus come to the rescue and suggested that the Board should take up the question of getting suitable private ladgings for scholarship holders who could not afford to pay the £40. He thought suitable abcomraodation could be obtained for £25. We are pleased to find that the members approved of the idea, po that all that remains is to put it into execution. These are the views that need veniilating and suggesting, and we again say we are glad our nominee has thus justified the trust reposed in him.
