The Development of the Timber Industry.
We learn from the EegistrarGeneral's Department that at the date of the Geowuß (April last) there wera 299 sawmills and sash and door manufactories in operation, against 243 in 1886, an increase ot 56, or at the rate of 23 per cent. In the North Island there are 155 mills, and in the Middle bland 144. The hands employed in these mills increased during the quinquennium at a still greater rate, the figures being 4059 persons for 1896, and 3266 tor 1891, increase 793, or 24 per cent. Four of the hands eraployejl in 1896 were women. The number of hands given in the returns does not include everybody employed in connection with the industry, ai there are many men engaged in the bush work not included. Further particulars are as under : — l. Value of land, buildings, machinery, and plant, April, 1896, £578,422 ; April, 1891, £500,272 ; increase, £73,150, or 14 62 per cent. 2. Value of all manufactures during 1895 and 1890. Year 1895, £898.807 ; 1890. £832,. 959 ; increase, £65.848, or 791 per cent.
The value of the export of timber for 1895 was £148,995.
