Town Committee.
On Tuesday evening the Town Committee met at Whyte's Hotel to take ipto consideration what steps would be best to take to celebrate the launching of Mr Ho wan 'a new steamer.
Mr J. R. Stansell was in the chair, and a conversation took place as to the date for the launch, it having been desired to have secured the attendance of the outside public, but as Mr Thynne, the secretary, reported the receipt of a letter from the railway traffic manager who desired a guarantee of close on £18 before he would run an excursion train, it was decided that no assistance from the railway authorities could be looked for, and therefore as the railway convenience had not to be considered any date would do. It was therefore deoided that the launch should take place on Thursday next at noon, at which the Mayors of Fox ton, and. the Mayors of Palmerston, Feilding and Woodville, and the Chairmen of the Counties of Manawatu and Horo whenua, should be invited to attend and address the assembly. It was mentioned that Mr Howan had requested Miss Thynne to perform the ceremony of christening the new boat the " Sunbeam " and that she had consented:
As the ceremony will be of an educational interest it was further decided that the School Committee be asked to give the scholars a half-, holiday on that date. Everything therefore bids well
that the new boat, for whose successful career ail who have the welfare of the town and district at heart, Wish heartily, will have a good send-ofr*.
A3 the steamer, once afloat will soon have her engines and boiler on board, the first trip wag talked about, and Mr Howan will probably run an opening excursion at cheap rates on Tuesday, 17th November, the particulars of wbich will bo duly notified in those columns.
At the meeting Mr Thynoe showed the proofs of two blocks which he has had prepared to illustrate tile leaflets of future steamer excursions, and they were very much admired. The blocks were prepared from photographs taken by Mr John Walsh, and show a party of young people on the seabeach at the Wbarangi pipi gathering, and the other a view of the old wharf and house at Faiaka.
