Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, OCT. 24, 1896. Comparisons.
Wx need not say what comparisons are compared to, but it is as well sometimes to make use of them to point a moral if they do not adorn a tala, more especially if the tale is a political one. Flak eSperta are valued by the Government at a paltry £250. From a parlimentary paper we find that the dairy expert coat the Colony the sum of £1454 12s 2d, and after thin expenditure has been incurred his services are lost to the country. The itemi of this expenditure are fully detailed and are as follows :— Cost of passages paid for Mr Valentine and any member of his family to New Zealand via Sweden, Norway, Denmark, or other countries in Europe, Canada, United States, and Australia : Passages for Mr Valentine aud wife to New Zealsnd via America, £180 18s ; passages for Mr Valentine and wife from New Zealand to .London via Australia, £165 10s : total, £346 Bs. Expenses for telegrams, cable* grams, hotels, &c. : Expenses, London and on Continent and United Stases and Australia, including railway fares, &c, £243 17s Id; expenses on paisago, New Zealand to London, £67 11s 6d ; expenses in England, £77 18s Id ; expenses in colony, including travelling allowance, rail, and steamer fares, £118 4s ; cables, £20 18s lOd; typewriting, £85 23 7d; clerical assistance, £8: total, £556 2s Id. Salary between date of engagement and termination thereof: 14th Ootober, 1898, to May, 1894, £221 2s Id ; June, 1894, to January, 1895, £800 ; allowance, special lectures in England, £21 : total, £542 2s Id. To help the timber industry the Government purchased timber, which they shipped by the s.s. Mamari to London. The paper is silent about the number of feet purchased at 10s 10£ d per 100 feet, but it must have been considerable as the freight alone was £86 i 15s Bd. The Government's timber deal turned out badly as they only realised £795 18s 8d net, and paid away £581 7s Bd, leaving £264 8a to cover the expeni diture on the timber. These items are only quoted to show how differently other industries are treated by our paternal Government, and they do help to emphasize the faot that better treatment should have been meted out to the flaxmiller.
