A New Private Colony.
Thi ittam yacht Velleda, belongiof to tho French millionaire, M M«aier, arrived at Havre a few days ago, having safely returned from a vuit to the island of Anticosti, in th* St. Lawrence River, off Canada, which that gentleman has recently bought. M. H. Menier was on board with two Parisian friends, and thtir Journey across the Atlantic only occupied ten days. The French yachtsman is said to be en •tented with hia latest purchase, whin he is going to set up a colony ttfluUr the name of the Independent Island of Anticosti, and it was in order to superintend tbe first installation that he undertook the present ftfage. The Island, which has two harbours, ia 126 miles long, and has already 100 inhabitants, mostly Canadians. This population will be incrtased, ere long, as the colonists Mt^to be allowed to send for their nkthrai. M. L. Commettant, a Itariiitn, has been appointed Goftmor by M. Menier, and is reported to Pt delighted with his new office.
