Sir Michael E. Hicks-Beach, Chancellor of the Exchequer, speaking on the Soudan expedition, declared that the capture ofDongola would be the stepping-stone into Khartoum when the existing financial obstacles are removed.
The Hon. G. N. Curzon, in the course of his address at Glasgow, said he thought it was certain that the British flag would ere long float over Khartoum.. He also declared that the Armenian agitation had neither modified nor fortified the Government policy. The relations of England with Russia were cordial, and be hoped they would be enabled to work on common lines with regard to Turkey and Armenia. It is regarded as certain that if England attacks Turkey one or more of tne other Powers will assail her.
Sir William Yernon Harcourt, Leader of the Liberal Party in the House of Commons, denies the rumour that he intends to resign. The oommittee of the National Federation, in recognising Lord Rosebery's signal services to the Liberal party, consider it would be unwise to convene the Council of the Federation while the heat and excitement of the present trouble prevails.
