Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, OCT. 8, 1896. Where Are We ?
On Monday night the Souse went into Committee of Supply, and the little discussion which has been reported will prove the exact position this town and district are in as regards proposed expenditure, and that is "out in the cold." It is not a pleasant position, and it is not as though we had no wants ; but it becomes even more unpleasant when we find what other districts are getting. The Minister for Lands, in urging members to consider the Public Works Statement, stated that the sum of £100.000 was to be asked for roads and bridges in the Wellington Provincial District ! and he could not understand the City members raising any opposition. We go on the other 'lay,' we cannot understand how such a sum is proposed to be spent and not a single copper obnies-our way. We fear our. ! member has not been energetic in urging' our wants^and thus he contrasts very unfavourable with many other members, for we learn, from the same debate, that Mr G. Hutchison asked for works rpquiring £28,722, Mr F. McGuire for £54,000, and Mr Pirani for £41,400. Of course these gentlemen have not got all (hey. wanted, nobody ever does, but in asking for much thpy have succeeded in obtaining a little. Mr Wilson has often told us that he "was against borrowing, with which we agree to a certain point, but when borrowing has been agreed to we can only say we wish he had been actuated by Mr Duthie's feelings, who declared " that when the House had once decided to borrow it was the duty of members to get their share of the money for their several districts." The Premier was good enough to remark, a year or two ago, thatPoxton was " an isolated place," and because its inhabitants are quiet and good tempered, all think they can ignore us as much as they like. It must be our duty to change all this, and the candidates for Parliament must be giyen to understand that we shall demand more attention for the future. We earnestly recommend every man and woman not at present on the roll to register at once, so that when polling day comes our numbers may create attention from the successful candidate.
