Messrs Abraham & Williams hold a stock sale at Palmers ton on Thursday. In a Museum at Home is preserved the skeleton of the Irish giant, Charles Byrne, who died in 1783. He stood Bft 4in, but he died at the early age of twenty-two. The Hebrew population of London hat I more than doubled during the past twenty jyearß. At the Hawke's Bay Races yesterday Lotion won the October Handicap, Prince Charlie the Hurdles, Day Star the Guineas, Daredevil the Maiden, Sir Launcelot the Welcome Stakes, Mars the Corinthian Handicap, and Moonraker the Flying. It is but the other day a wag discovered an angular draught horse, in harness, unattended by his driver, when he arrived bt the idea carried out. He secured a show card and wrote thereon, " Space for oats. Apply within," and fastened it to the steed. What the owner said is best not repeated. The joker fled. The Wellington Industrial Exhibition Committee intend holding an elocution and musical contest) and are now inviting entries. In the elocutionary contests there will be recitations, dramatic, pathetio, humorous, and extempore speohes ; vocal music, a solo for Boprano, contralto, tenor, basa, and comic; instrumental music, solo for piano or violin. The Admiralty have decided to introduce into the Navy a new type of hammock, to be used only for the transport of wounded men. These hammooks will be supplied to every ship in commUsion in the proportion of 1 to every 65 men, and will be in addition to the ambulence stretchers now in use. The first edition of Ada Cambridge's "A Humble Enterprise," was exhausted on the day of publication, and bat few are left of the second edition. This last novel of the Victorian authoress is spoken of by the Critic of The London Daily Mail as " the most perfect piece of literary notion which has yet been produced by any Australian writer." At the Bank of Australasia meeting in London, Mr M. R. Smith, ohairman, said that severe competition in advances had left the borrowers masters of the situation. There was not enough business to afford legitimate employment to the vast banking capital in the colonies. The sustained rise in produce would improve the position of affairs, but this was unlikely to happen immediately. Australian banking was now approaching the English standard, he hoped they would be the pioneers of cheap banking in the colonies. Many a child has wondered, sitting in front of the fire in the winter evenings, why the flames which shot up were of such varied hues ; especially ig this with a wood fire. The different colours are caused by the combustion of the various elements of the wood. The light blue flame so often noticed comes from the hydrogen, the white from the carbon, the violet flames which often form a large percentage of the who'e are formed by the combustion of manganese, the red from magnesia, and the yellow from the soda. All these form large constituents of the wood burned on our hearths.
Mr Crabbe, the extreme prohibitionist demagogue, whilst haranguing the mob from the floor of a cart in a by lane off Cuba-street last Saturday (writes the Weilineton correspondent of the Otago Daily Timet), tickled the ears of Demos by Baying in effeot that .the time had come when every true woman would go to the ballot box and say : " That's one for the home and the children ; another to save husband Jim, amongst the first gentlemen of the land ; and one more to flatten out the pubs that were taking all his money," as she thoughtfully drops her ballot paper into the box. "0, but look here, Crabbe," called oat classic Charlie, " that time of yours is wrong. It's a Waterbury." " Well, it may be, but I find it keeps better time than a whiskybury !" returned the demagogue amid a roar of laughter.

One of the drawbacks of country life, at least to the small settler, is undoubtedly the increased price he has to pay for any articles of olothing or general drapery, by reason of the extra charges for freight or carriage. This drawbaok need exist no longer, for extra charges are done away with under the new parcel system which has been inaugurated at Te Aro House, Wellington.
