Foxton Borough Council.
The ordinary monthly meeting was held at the Library Buildings yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Present— The Mayor (G. Nye), Crs. P. Hennessy, E. O3borne and H. Border.
The newly-elected Councillors. Messrs T. Westwood, J. W. Walsh and H. Coley made the usual declaration and took their seats.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
The clerk submitted to the Council the report of the Public Works
Committee as follows :— Gentlemen, — Your Committee have the honor to report that the following is a record of work carried out during the last month. ' The contract on the Beach Road has been oommenced and the formation completed, and the olaying will be completed should weather permit during this week. j The day men have been at work as follows : — Cutting gone, etc., on the roads ; cleaning out drains on Baker and Easton-streets, and level' ling and sodding part of Avenue Road. The whole of the portion offered by tender has been completed in a satisfactory manner by the day* men. Webb and Blake have completed the falling of trees in the cemetery, and the whole has been ©leaned up and most of it taken away. G. Nye, Chairman. The report was received. Correspondence received was read as follows : — From J. Hillary, ferryman at Wirokino, applying for some relief as he had been put to much expense through continued floods. From Department of Agriculture, re subsidy to expert for flax industry. From General Post Office, Wellington, acknowledging receipt of letter re establishing a morning mail service. From Manawatu County Council, with reference to medical aid to natives in the Manawatu District, saying the matter had been referred to the Government. From District Lands Survey Office, saying the Marine Department have no objection to the road into the lot 3at the sea beach, provided the re-erection of the fences is carried out. From John Sullivan, roadman to Council, applying for a few days off on account of sickness, and that his son be placed in the position during his absence. From John Rutherford, Nelson, stating he had given up the properties formerly leased by him, and that he was not now responsible for rates. From secretary Charitable Aid Board, Falmerston, saying that 103 bad been allowed to be expended in relief in the case of an old woman in Foxton, and trusting to have a personal interview with regard to general administration. The following alterations in ratebook were asked for :—• Theo. J. Mitchell instead of Wm. Bramley, ' for sections 8, 9 and 10, Fart Block , VIII; Robert Morley, instead of Richard Walden, for Part section 87, . Lot 80 ; Henry Plimmer, instead of John Plimmer, for section 69. Proposed by Cr Henneasy, seconded by Cr Coley, That John Sullivan be allowed full time during sickness for , the last month. Carried. ; The following accounts were passed for payment :— Cbas. Nelson, £1 12 a 6d; J.Sullivan, £6 5s ; C. Spring, . £5 8i ; Fame, carting, £2 10a 7d ; ! A. Spring, £2 12s 6d ; T. F. Gibaon, £6 si ; R H. Guerin, £5 Os lOd ; charitable aid rations to Mrs Boesen, ! £1 9s 9d ; same to Mrs Small, £2 ; 1 funeral expenses of Henrietta Duackley, £8 143. Library Account— H. Blake, 16a 8d ; W. B. Rhodes, 7a. Cemetery Account— H. Webb, £2 83; H. Blake, £2 Bs. Proposed by Cr. Walsh, seconded , by Cr. Osborne, That the letter of Mr Rutherford be received, and that . the clerk be instructed to write to i him as to his position re rates. ■ Carried. Proposed by the Mayor, seconded [ by Cr. Coley, That the following air 1 teratious be made in the rate-book and burgess roll, viz. : — Part section , 87, Lot 80, be transferred from Richard Walden to Robert T. Morley ; Section 59, from John Plimmer to Henry Plimmer ; and . Part sections 8, 9, and 10, part Block VIII, [ from William Bramley to Theo. J. i Mitchell. Carried.
Proposed by Cr. Hennessy, seconded by Cr. Osborne, That this Council make an allowance of ten pounds part cost of labour to John Hillary, the ferryman, incurred for clearing the mud from approachei to the ferry through constant floods, subject to the consent of the Horowhenui County Council. Carried.
Proposed by Or Westwood, seconded by Cr Coley, That the clerk be instructed to write to the Minister of Agriculture in reply to letter received from the secretary of that department in reference to the flax industry, stating that this Council does not agree with the decision of the Cabinet, and directing his attention to the leading article which appeared in the Manawatu Hebau> of the 3rd inst. Carried.
Proposed by Cr. Oaborne, seconded by Cr. Walsh, That this Council grants the request of John Sullivan re allowing his son Con. Sullivan to do his (John Sullivan's) labor for three weeks as he is unwell. Carried.
Proposed by Cr Weatwood, se* conded by Cr. Walsh, That specffi • cations be prepared and tenders be called for making a cricket ground on the Recreation Reserve. Tenders to be in by Wednesday, 14th inst., and to close at 11 o'clock a.m. Carried.
