Lapland.
The above country we hear very little of, and is one likely to bo very little known. An interest has been aroused in it from the fact, our cablegrams state, that Russia proposes building a naval station ' at some place called Murnamby, which we gather is situated on the Gulf of Bothnia, which joins the Baltic Sea. Lapland was at one time nominally pubject to Norway, but is now to Sweden and Kussia. The country is extensive, and lies on the north of Europe between the White Sea and the Norwegian coast. It consists partly of desolate mountains, or vast moorlands, interspersed with lakes. Finland is to the south of it. Kronstadt is the naval port for the Baltic fleet, but has been always inconvenient owing to the ice in the winter, but wa doubt if the Lapland port will be any better in this respect. As the crow flies the port must be over 400 miles from St Petersburg.
