Manawatu Herald. THURSDAY, SEPT. 17, 1896. The County Loan.

« _ Oue readers will remember that on Saturday the poll for the £6000 loan in the Manawatu County will be taken. All who are desirous of seeing this loan carried must make it a point of polling and must see that their friends and neighbours do also, as the Act makes it imperative to count every vote not polled as one that was polled against the proposal. As in every district there are absentees, it has: been found a matter of much difficulty in getting a majority to the poll to voSe in favour of any scheme, so it will be seen how necessary it is that every effort should be made to record all votes available. The Councillors are all iu favour of the loan and they will, each in their own Riding, do all they can to get voters to the polling booth, and we trust their efforts will be crowned with success. It is undeniable that owing to the Government having ignored the just claim of this district to the construction of the LevinGreatford railway, under which the County and the Foxton Borough would have received a large sum for road construction, a loan has become neoesaary to make the much needed roads, amongst which is part of the main road between Foxton and Sandon. The proposed expenditure of the sum to be borrowed has been fully advertised, and has not met with any opposition, so the County authorities may be credited with having done their part, and we hope on Saturday night it will be seen that the ratepayers have done theirs.
