The Proportions of Our Flag.
It was recently asked of some public school children to give tbe exact proportions of the American flag and they were unable to do so. Some one, referring to this incident, says be has tried cyclopedias, officers of the navy and various lights of the educational world, but all in vain, and cannot find out. He asked enlightenment from the Brooklyn Eagle, which answers thus: It is not surprising that public school children could not meet tbe demand for information as to the dimensions of the Aaaerican flag. That does not belong to tbe educational routine. It is a kind of knowledge which must be acquired in tbe practicalpart of life. If a flag is 8 feet long each (tripe should be 4 inches wide, which would give a width of 4 feet 4 inches to the flag. The union should cover 7 stripes, and be one-third the length, or 32 inches wide. If the flag is 6 feet long it should be 3% feet irtde.
