Manawatu Herald. SATURDAY, SEPT. 5, 1896. Experts.

This is the season for " experts." Oar truly Liberal Government have found the term admirably adapted for their relations and friends. We have many experts and many are they who desire to become experts, all simply for the good of the colony. The last opening for an " expert " is that in flax, and much baa been said both for and against such appointment. We do not pretend to be in the position to judge how useful an expert might prove himself in the Old Country ; that he would enjoy himself we 'doubt not, but whether he c6uld do that which would repay the colony for the expense of his trip, is another thing. We understand that a gentleman interested in getting an expert appointed will visit Foxton next week, in compliment to the settlers having petitioned Government to appoint such an officer, and he feels confident of his power to make clear of what use to the flax trade such as expert would ba. The flax trade needs all encouragement, and if it is made clear that a gentleman by going Home could put life into the trade and secure an improvement in prices, by all means let us send him. The elections are drawing nigh, Government candidates will soon be travelling around singing the praises of the Ministry, and so it is just possible a little more attention to the " working man " may be shown, and an expert appointed. It must not forgotten, however, that the Premier told us, two years ago, that Mr LeeSmith had been instructed to inquire particularly into the flax industry, but up to now never a word has been reported.
