Committee Meeting.
The adjourned meeting of the committee set up last Thursday to promote the interests of the town, but which has as yet no settled title, was held at Whyte's Hotel last Tuesday evening. The originators were Messrs Henneggy, Stansell, Hamer, Rhodes, Westwood, and Thynne, who had power to add to their number, and the oommittte wa« ntr# ngth«aed by
the addition of Messrs "Walsh, Nixon, Eure, Jenks, B. Howan, J. Howan, Austin, E. Osborne, aid A. Jonson.
Mr Stansell occupied the chair, and the seoretary, Mr Thynne, again gave a resumf of the objeoti of the committee.
One of the first items that oame up for discussion was the calling for tenders for the mail service which bad been advertised as from Foxton to Shannon, but had been found, by the conditions of tender, to be** service from Shannpn to Foxton. During the discussion it was pointed out that to persons desirous of visit* ing Wellington, the morning coach was a great convenience, to secure which, the settlers had to raise ft yearly subsidy of 450. It had been hoped that the Government would have taken this foot into consideration and have called for tenders the reverse way to the past. It was noted that Mr StanseU might not be inclined to continue the service next yean Tfce inert fact of being ftble to reply tp Wellington correspond* ence on the same day, though con i venient, was not felt of so much consequence as being able to catch the morning train, as twice ft week the railway service enabled travellers to reach Wellington at night. It was therefore proposed by Mr Rhodes, seconded by Mr J. Howan, and carried— That the mail contract be altered to that for which tenders are called, so that the mails shall go from Foxton to Shannon in the morning, as the present morning service may be discontinued at any time, and that Mr J. G. Wilson to asked to interview the Secretary of the Post Office on this matter.
The launching of the ntw steamer now being built was considered, at Mr Bauckham had offered to provide a proper launch if assistance was given him by the loan of some of the Borough timber. The committee thought the ceremony would be both interesting and as of value in advertising the public-spiritedness of Mr Ho wan, and Mr Jenks moved, and Mr Jonson seconded — That the Borough Council be requested to render Mr Bauckham all assistance in launching the new tteamer, and that a ceremony on the occasion be arranged for. — Carried. Messrs Walsh and Austin proposed and seconded the following resolution which was agreed to — That a subcommittee be formed to see Who would be willing to convey passengers by road to the beach, with probable charges; to consist of Messrs Hen* nessy, Rhodes and Osborne.
On the motion of Mr Thynne seconded by Me Hennessy it was agreed, That a subcommittee be formed to find who will erect ft building to let, and at what charges ; to consist of Messrs Walsh) Jonson andLJenks. ['■.
Mr Nixon proposed and Mr Howan seconded, That a sub-committee, consisting of Messrs Stansell, Bhodes and Hennessy be appointed to see who would be likely to advertise special features in connection with the traffic to the Sanitorium.— Carried.
A motion was moved to name the committee " The Foxton Sanitorium Committee " but the name did not find favour and an amendment to hold over the selection of a name until next meeting was carried.
Mr Thynne proposed and Mr Oaborne seconded, and the resolution was carried, that the Chairman write to Mr A. Strang to ask him to get a small immediate expenditure on the road to the beach bo that it might be passable for vehicles. A discussion followed as to what the railway management might be asked to do, in connection with running excursion trains for the beach, and as Mr Nixon was going soon to Wanganui,
Mr Hennessy proposed and it wai seconded by Mr Thynne and carried. That Mr Nixon, when on a visit to Wanganui directly, be requested to interview the Traffic Manager as to running cheap weekly excursions to give visitors a chance of a few hours holiday, and whether he will eon* sidor the alteration of the Monday morning traiu so that it might leave, daring the simmer and autumn, at 7.30 instead of 9 a.m., to allow Palmerston residents to gat to business by 9 a.m.
The usual vote of thanks to the ohair brought a very useful and cordial meeting to a close.
