Canned boiled mutton is quoted ftt three pence per pound, corned mutton threefarthings more ; boiled beef at three pence and corned beef at same price as mutton in the London market. Mr J. H. Baker, whose resignation of the position of Commissioner of Crown Lands in Wellington has been accepted by the Government with regret says the Post, will sever his connection with the Service in about a fortnight. It is his intention to take up his residence in the Old Country. We would draw the attention of our contemporary the Post to its list of probable candidates at the next election, wherein it is stated that Mr Stevens will stand for Bangitikei. This is undoubtedly an error, as Mr Stevens has announced his intention to stand for Manawatu. A machine has been designed for affixing stamps to lette s and circulars with extraordinary rapidity. The motions of detach ing, damping, and fixing are all performed by one revolution of a small wheel attached to the machine. From 4000 to 5000 letters an hour can be stamped, and tbe maobine will register the number of letters thus treated. The conduct of two or three members of the House of Representatives this session (says the Wellington People) has beea disi graceful. They have been in a chronic state of drunkenness, making themselves a nuisance, both to members and the public who frequent the House. These men are unfit to be legislators and are a disgrace to their constituencies. Surely this is a strong argument for the abolition of Bel lamy's altogether. When found make a note of. A new use has been discovered for hops— namely, the curing of bacon. It is found that a sprinkling of hops in the brine when bacon and hams are put in pickle adds greatly to the flavour of both, and enables them to be kept an indefini te period. The Queen of Sweden, who is one of the richest women in the world, owes her great wealth to the gambling tables at Weiebaden, which were owned by her brothers, from whom she inherited her vast fortune. Her Majesty, who is a bit eccentric, always dresses in the costume of the Salvation Army, to which organisation she belongs. A French Agriculturist has lately dis^ covered a very simple method of preserving erain of all kinds from the ravages of mice. He states that a few sprigs of wild mint in full leaf placed at the top and bottom of each sack will effectually prevent the little rodents from attaoking it, and they seam to entertain an invincible antipathy to its odour. Joe Tob, our market gardener, has for sale rhubarb and spinach, grown in hia own garden. At the State School yesterday afternoon the members of the football club presented Mr Hird with a silver-mounted pipe, in recognition of the interest he had phown in the club. Mr Hird left by train this morning for his new school at Baetihi. There wad a meeting last night of those interested in cricket in response to Mr Stewart's advertisement, but owing to the weather tho attendance was small, and it was decided to adjourn to Wednesday evening. Mr Stewart holds a new bat and ball and all other materials bo that the club has a good start for the season. Mr A. Anderson, a nephew of Mr Nixon's, started on his « bike ' from Wanganui on Tuesday morning at seven o'olock and reached Foxton at three o'clock, though he had to take shelter from the rain for an hour and a half. Good travelling this. Yesterday afternoon a few friends met Mr Stephen Startup at Whyte's Hotel and presented him with a handsome malaooa cane with a buokhorn handle, on which bis name was engraved on a silver band, as a memento of his residence in Foxton. Mr Startup was very much surprised, but ex* pressed his thanks suitably. Mr Rhodes made the presentation. Mr Startup leaves by train this afternoon. After discussing the Bill drafted by the Premier for the suppression of juvenile immorality, the Auckland Women's Democratic Union decided to forward the following resolution to Mr Seddon : — " While thanking Mr Seddon for his effort to | legislate against the increase of juvenile depravity, we wish to protest against the police taking the power to arrest any girl, , and would suggest that women be appointed for that purpose, with power to call on the police if necessary."
